5 Essential Tips to Make Your Move (Almost) a Picnic

Jun 10, 2016Blog0 comments

Gather up some wine boxes, a picnic cooler and an overnight bag. You’re about to embark on an adventure in moving that’s pretty much a picnic in the park if you let Kary Movers do the heavy lifting.  What do you need to do? Just follow our 5 essential moving tips.

Pack an overnight bag containing all your essentials.

Sometimes you should sweat the small stuff. Even if you’ve had the good sense to leave the bulk of the moving to the professionals at Kary Movers, there’s likely a lot on your mind come moving day. Lack of little things like missing toiletries can lead to unpleasantries. Other little day-to-day stuff (like keys) have a nasty habit of ending up in the bottom of seldom-used items. It’s a mystery– like lost socks in a dryer. But it happens. The best way of avoiding this is to keep those little essentials, including a change of clothes, within easy access. Pack an overnight bag. Kary Movers will take care of just about everything else.

There are a few other things you can do to make your move a bit easier.  Let’s start in your kitchen.

The only way to pack plates is…

Packing plates this way may be counter-intuitive for you, given that you most likely store your plates horizontally– and eat from them the same way. We’re not going to turn your world upside down, just sideways. After you’ve wrapped your plates in packing paper, stand them up on their rims in a small or medium-sized box. They break easier when laid flat.

Packing perishables.  It’s like a picnic in the park.

Your big ‘ol cooler. If you haven’t already sold it at your pre-move yard sale, pack it up with your fridge and freezer contents. Worried about drips? Pack the frozen items in resealable bags. Place frozen food on top since cool air travels down. Pack the cooler last so it can be the first thing you unpack when you arrive at your new place.

Don’t hog cooler space with food items that don’t need to be refrigerated:

You might be surprised at stuff that you don’t actually need to refrigerate, like bread. (Okay, that’s an easy one.) But here are a few more that maybe you didn’t know about:

  • Salted butter (as long as it’s in an airtight container)
  • Ketchup
  • Tomatoes, apples, berries
  • Jam
  • Grated Parmesan cheese. This is one type of cheese that doesn’t need to be refrigerated after opening. (Which makes us wonder if it’s really cheese at all.)

Now, down the hall to the bedroom for our final two tips.

The wardrobe box: clothes saver, time saver

Instead of folding and boxing all your shirts, blouses, dresses and pants with their hangers, use a wardrobe box. Unpacking will be much easier, and you can hang them up in your new closet the same way you’ve hung them in the wardrobe boxes. After the move, let your kids and their imaginations take over and turn in into — who knows– maybe the USS Wardrobe Container, exploring new space frontiers in the galaxy– or your new bungalow.

Packing shoes. It’s an art, like wine making.

Here’s just one more reason to drink wine. (As if you needed one.)  Old wine boxes are great for packing shoes.  If you’ve been buying at least one bottle of nice wine with every shoe purchase, your life is obviously very good– and your upcoming move will compliment your lifestyle.

Worried about your shoes losing their shape? That’s what socks are for. Stuff your shoe’s tips with socks. Both and both shoes and socks will feel right at home travelling together– arriving relaxed at your new home with a slight glow from the scent of fine merlot.

If you run out of socks it could mean you have either too many shoes or not enough socks. While you debate that issue with yourself, use tissue paper.
